FAQ

Those who are looking for an answer to the question «Why isn't my new kitten going to the bathroom?» often ask the following questions:

❔ Kitten cries when going to the bathroom?

If that doesn't work and your kitten hasnt pooped in days or is crying excessively while going to the bathroom, the kitten probably needs an enema. Don't do this at home unless you know what you are doing, the amount, mixture and method are all important and getting one of those wrong can kill the kitten also.

❔ Why isn't my kitten going to the bathroom?

If the kitten hasn't peed or pooped even after you've stimulated its abdomen and anal areas, it's time to call the vet. There's a chance your pet could have an undiagnosed health problem. In such cases it's of intrinsic importance to act on time if you want your fluffy pal to lead a happy, long, and thriving life.

❔ Why is my kitten not going to the bathroom?

Go in there regularly to comfort and pet her and obviously check to see if she used the box. Then perhaps put her back in the bathroom or smaller room when you are not home. I've always done this when bringing home a new kitty. If she has still not used the litter box i would be concerned and put a call into your vet.

Don’t worry if she misses a time or two. If she doesn’t poop for 48 hours, or begins to act weak or lethargic, or vomits call your veterinarian. When you finish “Feeding and Wee-ing”, you’ll need to give a little butt bath. As the kittens mature and become more active they will crawl about and pee or poop onto their bedding.

This is quite normal in the case of a new arrival in a new environment! Unless she appears to be straining, shows signs of painful urination then there's no reason to worry. In the meantime I'd place her in the tray every so often and see if she reponds.

Debbie Denison answered If the cat is not urinating, or only a small amount at a time or acts like it's straining to go, get the cat to a vet. This could be a urinary blockage, which can be a life threatening situation. Again, call your vet if the cat is having bowel movement problems.

my one cat has all the signs and symptoms that i have read about associated with that of a uti. i have noticed that at the beginning my cat had been licking itself constantly in the genital area, having a strong odor of urine, and refusing to use the litter box like normal. just recently i have noticed that he has been sleeping a lot more then usual, his water intake has almost doubled, and refuses to my knowledge of what i have seen to eat any form of food, either dry or wet ...

This would usually, but not always be to do with the cat’s bladder or bowel. They might be stressed out, or in pain, and therefore avoid the tray, or just may not make it there in time.
