A P-Trap, which is sometimes called by plumbers as a Stink Trap or water trap is the "U" portion which makes your sink safe from incoming sewer gasses and anything else like vermin that might come into your home through the drain. This is accomplished by the water which rests in the "U" portion of the trap.

In most Sacramento homes, there is a P-trap installed under the sinks in the bathroom and kitchens. A P-trap is a plumbing fixture that has several purposes. It traps debris that has drained from the sink and prevents it from forming a clog deep within the plumbing system, and to stops sewer gases from passing into the home.

If you’ve ever encountered problems with your sink’s drain, you’ve probably heard the term p-trap thrown around here and there. While it is a simple device, few homeowners understand how it works and why it matters. Here’s a quick overview of p-traps you can reference when sink-related plumbing issues arise in your home.

P-traps are where clogs usually develop in sinks: they catch hair, soap scum, and grease. Sometimes you’ll need a professional plumber to clean out your p-trap, wither with hydro-jetters or by removing the pipe. Make sure you let a professional handle this job: trying to work on a p-trap yourself can get messy.

Modern plumbing experts advise consumers to always have p-traps under their kitchen or bathroom sinks. They catch debris that falls into the sink, minimizing the chance of a choke. Other than that, these traps protect the overall plumbing system by preventing litter from draining deeper into the main pipes.

Never remove a P trap. The purpose of the P trap is two-fold. Firstly it prevents nasty smells from entering your home through the sink, as water sits in the bottom of the trap forming a barrier against movement of smelly air.

Every sink needs a sink vent. A plumbing fixture like a sink can not function properly without a sink vent. When a drain pipe drains it creates a negative pressure in the sink drain; the negative pressure will pull the water out of the p-trap of the sink that's draining and sewer gases can enter your home if a sink vent is not installed.

Here we show you how to perform your plumbing P-Trap Installation when the bathroom sink drain doesn’t line up. PLEASE NOTE: We initially show the P-trap bac...

A plumbing drain trap is designed to retain a small amount of water each time the sink drains, and this water standing in the bottom of the curved portion of the trap seals the drain and keeps sewer gasses from escaping the drain and entering your home.

This is the U-shaped segment of pipe you see under the sink. The role of this p-trap is to hold a protective barrier of water, which keeps sewer gases from wafting up through the pipes and into your bathroom. If the p-trap goes dry, however, then you no longer have that barrier to keep sewer gases from drifting up into your home.
