What Causes My Shower Drain in my RV to Clog Up? If I had to guess at the cause of your bathroom sink clogging up, it would be hair in the sink drain. This is the reason 90% of the time. It’s a good practice to brush out your hair before getting into the shower.

The most common reason for RV toilets to be clogged is a buildup of toilet paper and waste at the base of the black holding tank. The clog will begin where the tank drains into the sewer and gradually build up until it reaches the toilet.

We pulled back into an RV park around sunset and I began my search for “how to fix a clogged RV toilet.”. Many sources suggested plungers, toilet augers, and septic-safe chemicals. But I was in a forest in New Hampshire, with no access to any of these tools.

Some RVs have two separate holding tanks for the kitchen and bathroom waste water (the kitchen tank is often called a galley tank). If this is the case for your RV, make sure both tanks are empty. If a full tank is not the problem, you likely have a clog caused by hair, grease, or food buildup in your tank or drain.

It may be a bit dark in the shower of your RV, especially with your body obscuring the light from above. Take a flashlight in with you and shine it down into the drain to see if you can visually confirm the presence of a clog. If you do see the clog, it might be possible to break it up manually with a long, slender object.

Answer: It is possible that you have a bad valve or that there is an internal plumbing problem. If you are not handy enough to deal with these issues, you'll have to take your coach to an RV repair shop that is willing to do a job like this and pay them to clear the clog for you.

A clogged RV toilet never happens at a convenient time. In fact, it usually happens when you least expect it. Prepare now! This step by step post will teach you how to unclog an RV toilet. (Just in case you are ever stuck in the woods and you need to know what to do in a hurry!)

Some newer RVs have a HepVo Waterless Valve in place of the traditional P-trap. This fitting contains an internal, rubber diaphragm that prevents backflow of air and water into your shower. It may also be in your bathroom and galley sink. In fact, with the HepVo valve, using a plunger can cause the one-way valve to be sucked backward.

Occasionally an RV toilet stinks because of buildup in the black tank. This might be a large buildup of solids on the bottom of the tank, or just buildup along the walls of the tank from regular use. As with clogs, solid buildups tend to be caused by too many solids and not enough liquid in the tank.

Your camper smells like sewage because there’s a blockage somewhere in your RV’s sewer system. There is a high chance the clog is somewhere in the black water tank that is forcing your RV toilet to smell bad after your flush. You haven’t cleaned your RV toilet for quite some time.
