The last few days I have been reading through as much information as humanly possible on the subject of adding salt to an aquaponics system or giving your fresh water fish a salt bath.It is my understanding from the material I have read that the reason for the salt bath is to help sickly, or new fish within a system.

1 lb of salt per 100 gallons = 1.25 ppt 1 lb of salt per 125 gallons = 1 ppt Anyway 600 gallons and trying to get a level of 3 ppt of salt to help fish without hurting plants. 3 ppt divide by 1.25 ppt = 2.4 lb per 100 gallons to get the 3 ppt

I've read salt: "The main purpose of adding salt in Aquaponics is for disease control; salt acts like a natural anti-bacterial agent. In addition, a small amount of salt improves the mucous covering on a fish's body, and this improves the resistance of the fish to diseases and parasites. Salt may also help to prevent fungal infections."

•Remove fish from tank and place in smaller container with 10-30 ppt salt, then place back in tank •Can go up to 30 minutes if fish tolerate, but usually a dip is much quicker (1-2 minutes at higher end of ppt concentration) •Ensure fish getting enough Oxygen through process •Ideally use NaCl, sea salt, solar salt

The salt bath concentration should be 1 kg of salt per 100 liters of water. Place the affected fish in the salty solution for 20-30 minutes and then transfer to an isolation tank containing 1-2 g of salt per liter of water for 5-7 days.

If you do add salt it should be sea salt, aquarium salt, or pool salt and at no more than 12g of salt per 1 gallon of water. Also note that once you put salt in the water it will not go away for a very long time unless you change the water. It will not evaporate and the plants will not uptake hardly any of it. So one dose is all you need.

1 Tbsp Salt per 3 Gallons of Water Add 1 tablespoon (Tbsp) of salt per 3 gallons of water. You can pour the salt directly into the aquarium or hospital tank, but some people like to dissolve the salt in a small cup of water first. This level of salt is like using Neosporin topical ointment for a small cut (in other words, it’s not very strong).

Salt does not kill ich. Adding salt is beneficial to help heal the tiny wounds caused by the ich. Add 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons, so 2 tablespoons in your aquarium. Raise the temperature gradually to about 86 and keep it there for 2 weeks. Ich cannot breed at this temp and will fall off the fish and die.

In this case, a formaldehyde bath (some have done salt bath) may be given to an isolated group of fish before being returned to join the general population. Oxygen requirements Trout need higher levels of dissolved oxygen compared to other fish types, like perch or tilapia .
