Using detergent oil that holds the dust will not allow the layer to form but I suspect it still allows the filter to work O-K. I've checked Donaldson's website several times and they give NO cleaning efficiency ratings for oil bath air cleaners anywhere.

Oil bath air cleaners have been largely replaced by dry paper filters in most modern tractors, as the oil makes servicing both messy and inconvenient due to the frequency of cleaning required. Oil bath filters are, however, very efficient at capturing dirt and can sequest a large amount of dirt relative to their size, without loss of efficiency.

Some early filters used horse hair for the element, while some more modern filters used foam. The filter element could be cleaned with kerosene. This was typically the job of the newest guy at the shop. The oil used for the bath was typically engine oil that had to be filled to a specific level for the filter to be able to catch debris.

Use of oil that is too light will cause the oil to be drawn beyond the filter and into the engine. Use of oil that is too heavy will not allow the oil to be drawn up far enough and much of the air cleaning surface area ends up being unused. Manufacturer owner manuals always show the oil weight that is designed for the system.
