The toilet flange, also known as a closet flange, is the part of the toilet that secures the unit to the floor and connects to the drain pipe.Usually made of PVC, rubber or metal, this piece is circular in shape and usually secured in place with a few bolts. If your flange is loose or deteriorating, it can leak and erode the surrounding flooring, causing significant damage over time.

Now that the flange is installed, place a wax ring on the bottom of the toilet and slowly place it onto the flange. Then, re-bolt the toilet into the floor and make sure that it is secure.

Step 2 - Plan Your Bathroom Framing. In planning your framing, keep in mind that moisture in your bathroom will be an important factor, because of high moisture content in the air from showers and constant running water. For this reason, plan to use moisture proofing to keep floors from sustaining water damage and buildup of mold.

If lighting fixtures are to be replaced, turn off electricity to the bathroom and remove the lights. Take accessories like towel racks from the walls. Remove tile, backer board and drywall from areas where it will be replaced. Remove the tile or linoleum flooring and check for water damage to the subfloor.
