Rinse your bath pouf completely clean under very hot water and shake it out. Hang it up to dry. Launder or replace your bath poufs at least once every four to six weeks, because they do retain bacteria. If you decide to wash them, use hot water and let them go through the dryer.

Get Clean: Use a Sea Sponge, Not a Shower Pouf or Washcloth. When I was a little girl, my mother made me shower with an African sponge, this long, mesh-like material we would use like a pouf (or loofah) — a dense, mesh-like ball that creates a nice lather and exfoliates your skin in the shower.

Steps to Clean and Disinfect a Bath Sponge: Fill the bucket or sink with one gallon of water. Add ¾ cup of bleach for synthetic sponges or ¼ cup for natural sponges. Place the sponge into the mixture. Allow it to soak for at least 5 minutes. Remove and rinse completely with water. Squeeze and shake ...

I would try soaking it in a vinegar bath (about 1 cup of vinegar with about a gallon of water) for 30 minutes and then rising it with clean water until the vinegar smell is gone. Once it dries, the color should no longer run. Hope that helps!

Fill a sink or bucket with one gallon of cool water. Add 3/4 cup of chlorine bleach if the loofah is made of synthetic fibers, or 1/4 cup of bleach if it's made of natural fibers. Submerge the loofah in the bleach water and let it soak for at least five minutes. Take it out of the bleach solution and rinse it thoroughly under running water.

Don’t rinse and wring them out, and then leave them to dry in the shower. At the very least, wash them thoroughly using hand soap and hang dry in the sun. Washing in hot water with fragrance-free soap and Borax is preferable. You may throw washcloths in the washing machine.

Another option is to keep your bath scrubbies clean and disinfected all the time by keeping them soaking them in 3% hydrogen peroxide, all the time. If you decide you want to do this, you’ll need a plastic container to keep your scrubbies in. It needs to be plastic so that it can’t break (glass around a bathtub is a very bad idea).

If you have access to a sink, a hose or a bucket of clean water, opt for a sponge bath to clean yourself. Simply fill a container full of water, add some soap if you have it and soak a sponge. Squeeze out the excess water and sponge off your skin. If you don't have a sponge, you can use a washcloth instead.
